Figure Skating Clubs - How do they function?
United States Figure Skating (USFS) is recognized by the United States Olympic
Committee (USOC) and the International Skating Union (ISU) as the national governing
body of figure skating in the United States. They are charged with determining a selection
process for nominating skaters for the Olympic, World and International skating teams.
They do this by running qualifying events each year across the country culminating with
the national championships which are held at the beginning of each year. The USFS is
made up of skating clubs from across the United States and these clubs meet together each
May to elect officers and board members and to vote on the rules and regulations of our
sport. All the people who serve as officers, officials and committee members are volunteers.
All the people who serve as officers and club officials on the local level are volunteers as
well. Other than the staff members at the USFS the whole association is completely
dependent on people who have a passion or at least an interest for our sport and are willing
to give of their time to make the sport great for future generations.
Whenever you bring a child to the sport there comes a responsibility to help support the
sport by giving of your time and talents at least while your skater is still skating. Many of
your club officials and board members no longer have skaters involved in the sport but
have stayed involved because of their love of the sport and their desire to share their
experience with the next generations of skaters.
We know that it is difficult to balance busy schedules and still find time to volunteer, but
anything you can do for the club will be greatly appreciated. The board meets once a
month on the 2nd Monday for about an hour and they are a great bunch of people. The pace
of the meeting is quick and the spirit is light as we are all there to help skaters and not to
make it another job!
Other capacities where you can help are by chairing committees or helping at club events
and functions. You can see on our bulletin board some the committees that we have and
maybe one of them would be right up your alley. Any of the funds generated to the club
through these events and functions is directly channeled back to you, the members.
Please consider how you can help and let one of your board members know of your interest
and desire in helping make the Colorado Skating Club the best club!
We need your help and involvement! Please consider how you can help with one of the following committees. Click on the committee name to contact the committee chair and find out more!
